Bergamo's economy generates a high volume of gross exports, with high export propensity. In 2023 exports from the province were worth over 20 million euros.
According to Prometeia, in 2022 the export propensity rate (share of exports over GPD) was around 48%, close to both Germany's and the European average, and higher than the Italian average. Bergamo's export propensity rate is higher than both Milan's and the Lombardy average.
The evolution of Bergamo's exports has been remarkable in recent years. Over the past ten years, they continued to grow, with the exception of 2020, which was deeply impacted by the global pandemic.
The analysis of the economic structure reveals that only seven activities account for 86% of the value of exports in the province of Bergamo. The two activities with the greatest share in exports are machinery and equipment with around 24% and basic metals at 15%.
The sectors classified by OECD and Eurostat as medium-high technology manufacturing activities - machinery and equipment, electrical machinery and chemicals - account for 45% of exports.
